Phyto-Active Nature Compounds from Four Croatian Satureja Species
Satureja is a genus of the well-known medicinal plant of Lamiaceae family and comprises numerous species growing wild in the Mediterranean area. This abstract reports the phyto-active composition of the essential oils and glycosidically bound volatile compounds of the Satureja montana, S. cuneifolia, S. subspicata and endemic species S. visianii from Croatian Adriatic coast. The major compound in the essential oil of S. montana and S. cuneifolia was carvacrol. The major compound in the oil of S. subspicata was spathulenol, whereas the oil of S. visianii contained camphor. The composition of glycosidically bound volatiles shows geraniol and carvacrol content in all investigated Satureja plants. Other important aglycones were thymoquinone of S. montana, borneol of S. cuneifolia. eugenol of S. subspicata and α-terpineol from S. visianii. The comparison of the essential oil and free volatile aglycones reveals nine common compounds: linalool, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, borneol, myrtenol, nerol, geraniol, thymol and carvacrol.
