GROSS ANATOMY AND RADIOLOGICAL FINDINGS IN PIGLET WITH VISCEROCRANIAL MALFORMATION

Congenital anomalies are structural tissue and organ defects that develop during morphogenesis, and usually seen after birth. Incidence and etiology of congenital anomalies in domestic animals are still poorly known. Principal reason for this is the small number of described cases. During a normal delivery Landrace breed sow, eleven piglets were farrowed. Ten piglets were vital and normally developed, while one had clearly visible changes in the mandibular and maxillar region. The monster was described and analyzed by rendgenography, computer tomography and magnetic resonance. Autopsy served as verification of radiological findings. The monster had fully developed body coupled with major facial anomalies. The rostral part of the face was elongated, similar to elephant proboscis, with fully developed and opened nares. The eyelids were closed. Pinnas were distinctly large, with the ear openings placed laterally. The radiological analysis of the head showed a developed neurocranium with closed, distinctly formed cranial cavity. Brain was normally developed. Parts of the viscerocranium were missing, including maxilla and mandibula. Accordingly, there was no oral cavity, while nasal cavity exhibit only olfactory part. Pharynx was developed, but with closed passages into nasal and oral cavity. Larynx, esophagus and trachea were normally developed. Although it is not always possible to precisely assess the cause of congenital anomalies, it is important to recognize, describe in detail, and study embryonic mechanisms for their development Described malformation corresponds to extremely rare aprosopia.
