Aspartat aminotransferase a marker in periodontal disease activity
This paper reports on the relationship between aspartat aminotransferase (AST) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and clinical indices of human periodontal disease. AST content of GCF was measured using a chairside colorimetric test at the level of 1200 IU at six teeth with radiographic obvious signs of periodontal destruction. The Perimonitor diagnostic test was performed prior and after therapy. Patients with moderate and severe periodontitis were treated with supra- and subgingival prophylaxis and control subjects with supragingival prophylaxis. The percentage of Perimonitor positive sites has significantly decreased between the first examination and one week after treatment. It was concluded that outcome of the test is an effective objective measure distinguishing between active and inactive sites of destruction in patients evaluated prior and following the application of therapy.
