Challenges in Choosing the Key Indicators for Measuring Sustainable Tourism Development

Determining the key indicators for measuring sustainable tourism development proved to be the most complex part of the process. Contemporary social changes have initiated the need for measuring the impact of global development on local communities. Even though development should exert predominantly positive impacts, there are numerous negative impacts which could be interpreted as negative consequences of development. As the importance of sustainable tourism development gained recognition, development indicators became more crucial for determining its impacts on certain communities. Initially the research was focused on ecological sustainability, while later the focus shifted to economic sustainability as one of the crucial forces that generate impacts on the long-term prosperity of the local community. One of the aims is to point out the importance of the labor force as a key indicator of economic sustainability that influences seriously both the economic profile of any local community and the quality of its tourism products – particularly since the quality of the tourism product within a community depends heavily upon it. The authors indicate the shift in the attention to certain sustainability criteria over a period of time and point out the changes in the contemporary research in which all criteria have the same importance and are given the similar weight.
