“Vera sciencia prognosticandi”: Astrology in 16th Century Southern Europe
Federik Grisogono, with his work De modo collegiandi, is taken as an example for the use of astrology during the Renaissance in the area of southern Europe.Astrology is a discipline that can be determined as an irrational approach to the world, when we take into account modern knowledge and value it in accordance. With its mythical approach to the world, it does represent a form of irrational understanding of the same. However, astrology in the time of the Renaissance appears more as a discipline that opens a potential for a rational approach towards the world, which is seen in the work of Grisogono. Astrology is used in a way to ensure the necessary knowledge according to which an individual may act correctly. Correct action is possible if we possess knowledge. And astrology, with its teachings, allows for the interpretation of the relationship between the heavenly and the earthy so as to enable the acquired knowledge to be used. Therefore, it appears as a discipline that allows Grisogono to step beyond a theoretical natural philosophy, by applying practical action to medicine and everyday life.
