EARTHQUAKE VULNERABILITY AND ENGINEERING EDUCATION
Researchers have argued that disproportionate destruction and death from earthquakes result from poor building practices, which are caused by lack of responsible governance, corruption, poverty, use of substandard building materials, inadequate construction methods, inadequacy or absence of building inspection, and lack of knowledge. In this paper, the subject of knowledge is examined using the data in Microsoft Academic Search, which can rank the Civil Engineering organizations in the world. These data are used to compare the academic research performance in Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia with that in California. It is shown that the academic production, measured in terms of the number of citations of published papers, is correlated with the relative wealth of the society.
ranking of organizations engaged in civil engineering education and research; relevance of published papers in terms of citations; gross domestic income per capita; and research productivity
