Chronic idiopathic constipation
Constipation is a common condition defined by less than three bowel movements per week. However, confusion still surrounds its definition despite recent efforts to standardize it. Constipation is frequently a consequence of altered motility of the colon. Judicious use of anorectal manometry, colon transit study, test of stimulated defecation and defecography may provide invaluable pathophysiological information. Treatment should begin with changes in diet, fluid and fiber intake, and concurrent medications. Biofeedback techniques could be useful in certain conditions. For selected patients with intractable constipation surgery has a good success rate.
