Expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and superoxide dismutase in salinity-exposed tobacco
Salinity is an important abiotic factor that limits plant growth and development. Excessive salt concentration in the soil inhibits germination and reduces yields. Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) hybrid DH10 and dihaploid lines (207B, 238C, 239K, 244B), obtained by diploidization of anther-derived haploids of hybrid DH10 were exposed to sodium chloride (100 and 200 mM) in in vitro conditions. The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of the salt stress on expression of heat-shock protein 70 (HSP70) and superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD). All dihaploid lines and hybrid DH10 showed an enhanced expression of Cu/Zn SOD in response to increased salinity suggesting that SOD has an important role in salinity tolerance. Decreased expression of HSP70 in salt treated plants indicates that HSP70 is not included in protection against salt stress in tobacco.
