Presentation, Writing and Interpersonal Communication Skills

The aim of this book is to help students improve their spoken and writing skills in English, as well as to introduce them to useful expressions for their future professional communication. The first chapter provides a systematic guide for giving presentations in English. The guide encompasses several phases, from presentation planning, forming a coherent presentation structure, followed by its performance and finally peer assessment, which points out to students’ strengths as well as weaknesses. The chapter on written communication deals with writing various types of papers, which students have to deliver during their university education (seminar, final, scientific papers). The principles mentioned in this chapter can be also applied to formal technical reports, conference papers and journal articles. Advice on the brainstorming of ideas, paper structure, writing style, as well as single examples of writing figures, formulae, measures, inserting diagrams, pie charts and tables aim to help students communicate their own ideas properly in written form. The third and final chapter aims to improve students’ social and communication capabilities which will be helpful in their future career. A number of useful expressions for communication in various situations are introduced, both in the private and professional spheres, such as “small talk” with colleagues, team work, presenting ideas and products, chairing a meeting, negotiations, decision making, reaching an agreement and other similar business situations. Mastering appropriate phrases improves students’ fluency and confidence. The acquisition and active usage of these phrases should help students solve potential communication problems as well as largely contribute to the development of general oral proficiency.
