Atypical versus conventional antipsychotics: clinical and functional floow-up of schizophrenic patients
We evaluated rCBF by SPECT with 99mTcECD in 29 schizophrenic patients and their symptoms by Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale for Schizophrenia while on haloperidol therpay, and repeated after 8-week treatmnet with risperidone. Comparing two SPECT studies in the same patient, we had the possibility to confirm functional impairments and follow up rCBF changes during different antipsychotic regimens, thus objectively evaluating therapy response. Symptoms correlated with dysfunction in various regions of the brain, following diverse lateralisation patterns. Different types of antipsychotics with different affinities fro many kinds of receptors in different ways modifies brain perfusion. Psychopathological improvement and the drug by its own mechanism alterate correlation between symptoms ans cerebral blood flow in partivular brain regions.
atypical antipsychotics; conventional antipsychotics; schizophrenia; regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF); single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)
