Taxa belonging to Schizostauron Grunow (Bacillariophyta) from Indian and Atlantic Ocean coasts of South Africa

A diatom genus Schizostauron was described by Grunow and originally four marine species were included, i.e. Schizostauron lindigianum, S. reichardtianum, S. ovatum and S. fimbriatum. The species belonging to Schizostauron did not receive much attention to date probably due to limited collections. Later on Hustedt transferred S. reichardtianum to Achnanthes sensu lato as A. reichardtianum. It was only Ross who has made a thorough nomenclature investigation of Schizostauron. Ross discovered that S. lindigianum is later homonym of Cocconeis dirupta Gregory and typified the genus with S. reichardtianum. A detailed description of Schizostauron taxa from South Africa and Mozambique based on LM and EM studies will be presented. Based on cultures from the Indian Ocean (Mozambique) sites we will also present the phylogeny of Schizostauron within Achnanthales using morphology (frustule), cytology (plastids) and rbcL, psbC and SSU gene sequencing.
