Comparison of dietary intake and food choices related to vitamin B12 dietary sources among adults from two Croatia's regions

The Mediterranean diet (MD) remained one of the most intensively researched dietary principle, not only across the Mediterranean, but in countries with non-Mediterranean populations. All of these studies have proven its beneficial impact that goes well beyond impact on cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Higher compliance to the MD shows inverse correlation with CVD mortality rate and cancers. Specific combination of foods, leading to specific macro and micro nutritional profile is considered to be responsible for such protective effect.Cancer is the third leading cause of death in Croatia. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the only cancer showing strikingly high correlation with diet ; around 90% of CRC cases can be attributed to nutritional habits. MD is proposed as one of the best prevention. Additionally, vitamin B12 is among micronutrients showing the strongest evidence of having a link to cancer prevention and control. Due to differences in nutritional habits and CRC incidence in two opposing regions of Croatia, the aim was to analyse dietary intake of vitamin B12 of adults in Slavonija-Baranja county and Dalmatia. The study was conducted in collaboration with the Croatian Food Agency. Adults completed semi- quantitative food frequency questionnaire, consisting of foods considered to be the best dietary sources of vitamin B12, i.e. meat, fish, milk and products, and eggs. Median intake of vitamin B12 in Dalmatia (n=165) is 1.60 μg/day, and 3.76 μg/day in Osijek-Baranja county (n=178). Spearman's rank of correlation for vitamin B12 intake between these two groups did not show significance, but separate analysis for food groups revealed statistically significant correlations in both groups. Gender analysis revealed statistically significant differences in total vitamin B12 intake and intake from meat between men and women from Dalmatia, while for Osijek-Baranja county, difference was found for intakes from milk and products and eggs. Comparison revealed differences in dietary vitamin B12 intake, suggesting the need for more detailed analysis of these habits while correlating them to CRC incidence.
