SEM Concept and Learner Centred Practice
The diversity offered by today’s society should be the impetus for exploring the variety and enrichment with new ideas, knowledge and experiences, as well as the development of critical thinking. In today’s educational system music is perceived as an autonomous art, mostly performing activities (singing, playing) and the tendency of modern society is reflected in connection and integration of different fields through an interdisciplinary approach. With the proposed SEM concept we support “learner centred” practice and the way how to maximise the learning opportunities connecting music with Drama education and English language, developing the full potential of the child. The SEM concept connects musical and dramatic art and English language in a unique way. It is reflected in linking educational content of artistic-linguistic fields and achieving tasks in a creative and innovative way. The integration and interdisciplinary approach of art and language enables the entire development of the child’s potential. In this presentation we present a way of work on a project called “Journey around Europe”, where we explain how to practically fulfil an interdisciplinary approach to art and language. “Journey around Europe” is conceived as one of the SEM concepts for sixth and seventh-grade pupils of primary school in which the interweaving of music (listening and analyzing fragments of classical music, exploring the concepts that make a linguistic repertoire essential to discuss the listened pieces of music, get acquainted with eminent European composers and their work), language learning (introduction of new words and phrases, dialogues and everyday communication, dramatizations ; interesting facts about a particular country and its people, games, quizzes, worksheets) and drama education (dramatic games, improvisation exercises and techniques ; verbal and nonverbal communication) travels around thirteen European countries (it starts from Spain, and ends in Croatia) and meets with the particularities of these countries and cultures.
