Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Rheumatoid Arthritis as a Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenge
For a long time, it has been an intriguing question whether inflammatory bowel diseases are a complication of rheumatoid arthritis or arthritis is an extraintestinal complication of inflammatory bowel diseases. A definite diagnosis can be made after extensive laboratory and clinical examinations, and follow up of the patient. Problems are also encountered in the therapeutic approach, because a certain therapy for rheumatoid arthritis may lead to exacerbation of the inflammatory bowel disease. The use of sulfasalazine, corticosteroids, local blocades, and occasionally azathioprine seems to be associated with the lowest risk.
