Antifungal susceptibility testing
During the past few decades, advances in medical technology and the development of new diagnostic and treatment approaches have increased the life expectancy of critically ill patients. The global human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic has resultedin an increase in severely ill immunocompromised hospitalized patients, accompanied by more reports of fungal infections. The mostcommon fungal pathogens associated with invasive disease in humans are opportunistic yasts or filamentous fungi. The emergence of this microorganisms and antifungal resistant fungi, esspecially those that are azole resistant, poses an important challenge to the clinitian. Thus, antifungal susceptibility testing is an exciting area in medical mycology.
