Indentification of sentinel node in melanoma and breast cancer using lymphoscintigraphy combined with gamma probe detection
We evaluated the potential of the gamma ray detecting probe in combination with lymphoscintigraphy, to detect sentinel lymph nodes in patients with melanoma and breast cancer. A total of 50 patients were studied, Tc-99m-HSA colloid was peritumorally injected, the sentinel node was scintigraphically documented and its site was marked on the skin, and confirmed the exact localization of the node using gamma probe both before and during the surgery. This procedure revealed sentinel lymph node, matching the preoperative localization with the intraoperative gamma probe findings, in all patients. Our experience indicates that preoperative lymhoscintigraphy which allows accurate detection of the sentinel lymph node in association with pre- and intraoperative use of gamma probe maximise the success of sentinel node localization.
