Knowledgw about side effects of UV rays in Croatia
Chronic sun exposure causes degenerative changes in the skin that are recognized as photoaging, immunosuppression and photocarcinogenesis. The most serious conseqence of the effect of sunlight on human health is malignant melanoma Sun exposue during the first years of life and blistering sunburns before age 20 have been linked to an increased risk of melanoma.A study was performed to compare the knowledge of people with and without malignant melanoma about the effects of UV rays on skin Improve people’s behavior in the sun and their awareness of the importance of proper photoprotection – changing habits. Decrease the number of skin damages caused by exceeded UV exposure. In the long-term, decrease the number of skin cancers. The results show us that sun exposure is still exaggerated and uncontrolled due to the lack of knowledge about this topic. Encouraging photoprotection and improving the awareness of the general public concerning about the harmful effects of exaggerated sun exposure must be the leading preventative health strategy. Health promotion campaigns about sun protection and complemental sun-related education in schools should be a major goal in health care for the future.
