Sacral bone lesions
Due to a relatively rare occurrence of neoplasm in the sacrum, insidious clinical symptoms (presentation), and reduced visibility of the sacral bone on plain films, sacral lesions are often overlooked. Differential diagnosis is broad, including: - metastases (to the bone or spinal canal structures), - primary bone neoplasm, - primary neoplasm of the spinal canal structures, - developmental malformations , - direct spread from an adjacent primary neoplasm, Specific imaging techniques (C11 MR, bone scan) help in showing the full extant of the lesion - its spread in the bone and adjacent soft tissue. Differential diagnoses can be narrowed and point to the most likely diagnosis of a particular lesion when considerations are made for age and sex of the patient, clinical history, and assessment of tumour margins, matrix calcifications and eccentric or central location.
