Horizontal Rotating Tubular Bioreactor- Possible Applications
Horizontal rotating tubular bioreactor (HRTB) combines the characteristics of "thin layer" bioreactor and "biodisc" reactor. The interior of HRTB is characterized by O-ring shaped partition walls, which together with bioreactor wall are supposed to serve as carriers fix microorganisms that form the active layer of biomass (biofilm). Biomass attachment on the bioreactor interior structures increases its residence in bioreactor, which results in higher bioconversion rates and lowered bioprocess duration. HRTB is suitable for various processes such as wastewater treatment, the production of etanol, organic acids, biopesticides and cultivation of animal cells and phototrophic organisms. In order to test the performance of HRTB in real systems the investigations in aerobic and anoxic processes were done. The dynamics of bioprocesses in HRTB was monitored by withdrawing the samples from five positions along the bioreactor. In both cases the investigations were done for wide range of process parameters. Obtained results pointed out that microorganisms formed the biofilm inside HRTB and the relative high bioconversion rate along bioreactor was achieved.
