Problems Pronouncing Aviation English
English is the official language of aviation worldwide. Its most important use is in communication among pilots and air traffic controllers. Errors can very easily lead to tragedies. It is, therefore, important that communication be as clear as possible. However, due to the nature of this type of communication and the English language, there appears very often a lack of clarity in communication and the culprit is usually pronunciation. Most often ambiguities appear in the pronunciation of numbers, putting the emphasis, in the words with a consonant group, new words (navigation fixed points) and generally when speakers use their own dialects. ICAO is continuously taking steps to remove those ambiguities and to standardize the pronunciation. This paper provides a list of the most common problems in the pronunciation of radio-telephone communication and further guidance in eliminating confusion so as to reduce errors in pronunciation to a minimum.
