Equilibrium Studies of Cobalt Ions Removal Using Fly Ash Class F
Heavy metals exposure, even at trace level, may damage human health, so the importance of heavy metal removal from wastewaters is still major and challenging task for environmental engineers. Nowadays, numerous methods have been proposed for efficient heavy metal removal from waters including chemical precipitation, ion exchange, adsorption, membrane filtration and electrochemical technologies. For that reason, a class F fly ash from the Croatian power plant Plomin 2 has been additionally grinded for activation and used for the sorptive removal of cobalt ions from aqueous solutions by a batch technique. The experimental data were obtained at constant temperature (298 K) and adsorbent particle size (< 45 μm) for the different initial concentrations of cobalt solutions. Various types of isotherm models, two-parameter isotherms: Langmuir, Freundlich, Jovanovic, and Temkin ; three-parameter isotherms: Radke-Prausnitz, Hill and Toth, and four-parameter isotherms: Fritz-Schlunder and Baudu, were fitted to the experimental data obtained, and their goodness-of-fit were compared. In order to calculate parameters of the isotherms a non-linear regression method was used. According to the results obtained the most appropriate model for describing equilibrium data was Jovanovic isotherm model, and for that reason this isotherm was combined with reactor model for batch reactor design.
