Disruptive Behavior in Young Learners of English: A Classroom Portrait

The thesis examines disruptive behavior in young learners of English. The questions of definition, rationale, impact, and approaches were explored at the levels of literature review and research. In addition, literature review provided a theoretical framework for the interpretation of research results. The research was conducted in a class of 15 students in the first grade of elementary school. Research methods included observation, questionnaire, and semi-structured interview. Research findings indicate that the English teacher may lack skills and time to understand and effectively manage disruptive behavior of young learners. The implications of the study concern 1) course developers at teacher- training colleges, who need to consider integrating classroom management and teaching young learners into the curriculum, and 2) school administrators, who need to consider providing more professional support and organizing remedial classes for students with discipline problems.
