Italian Political Speech between the Old and the New
The Italian political speech has undergone substantial changes in the last decades and such changes are reflected in lexis, in particular with the verbal political communication prevailing over the written one. Common, everyday speech understood by majority of speakers has substituted the erudite, elevated and carefully chosen style. That was the language that achieved a sense of closeness, belonging and almost sacred loyalty to a movement or a politician. Although numerous neologisms born on the Italian political scene have a short life, the words that don't pass the test of time still play the important role as they help understand the language evolution, the society and the world we live in. Starting from the mentioned facts and the need to analyse and classify the lexical chenges in the Italian language with the particular insight into the lexis of the Italian politics during the transition from the First to the Second Republic, the aim of this study has been to collect the corpus of neologisms and analyse the lexical aspect as well as rhetorical and stylistic characteristics of the corpus, keeping in mind the latest Italian political changes and the changes that Italian political speech has undergone in daily newspapers and on TV.
