Corrosion protection in seawater by self- assembling monolayers
Seawater is very corrosive towards metallic structures exposed to it. Therefore, corrosion protection is often necessary. However, it is important that techniques and compounds used in corrosion protection are not harmful to the marine ecosystem. One of the environmentally friendly techniques is modification of metallic surface by a thin film of organic compounds that prevent penetration of water and aggressive ions to metal surface. Aim of this research is to examine the possibility of protection of copper-nickel alloys with self- assembled monolayers of stearic acid. Various electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques are used to study the dependence of structure and protective efficiency of monolayers on organic acid alkyl chain length, head group and end group properties. Influence of monolayer preparation technique on its properties is also examined. Performance of the inhibitor is followed in time in 3% NaCl solution in stationary conditions. This work is based on research funded by The National Foundation for Science, Higher Education and Technological Development of the Republic of Croatia under the number 09.01/253.
