Optical sensing properties of novel highly fluorescent aminated benzimidazo[1, 2-a] quinolines
Novel amino substituted benzimidazo[1, 2-a]quinolines are presented as potential fluorescent pH sensitive probes. General structure of the dye molecules is based on fused highly conjugated planar chromophore system. Due to this, they show excellent optical properties, such as strong fluorescence in visible spectral range (around 500 nm) and good photostability. It is found that their protonation-deprotonation equilibria is associated with drastic changes in respective photophysical properties. These attractive findings were used as the basis for development of novel polymer based sensing materials. In order to evaluate their potential for sensing applications, a systematic comparative study of photophysical and photochemical properties of amino benzannulated benzimidazoles was performed. First, the compounds were characterised (UV–Vis absorption and fluorescence spectra) in aqueous solutions and/or organic solvents, after which the most promising candidates were immobilised in thin polymer matrices (plasticized PVC and hybrid sol-gel films), and further characterised for potential sensing applications.
