Dynamic mechanical analysis of UV irradiated multilayer polymer films

An airborne modul for a wind power plant is made of cylindric balloons. In order to reduce maintenance costs one has to optimise properties of the materials that are exposed to the outdoor conditions. For that purpose DMA and permeation of small gases through multilayer films of 25 and 60 μm thicknesses are tested. The former film is made of PA//EVOH//PA//PE (Heptax - Gunze) and the latter is made of TPU//EVOH//TPU . The EVOH layer is needed for its good barriere properties. The role of PE is to enable thermal bonding and PA and TPU layers are needed to improve toughness. The films are coextruded. DMA is performed on a wide temperature range from -190 °C to around 100 °C, where several relaxation processes take place. Of great importance is the fact that all the films have a relaxation peak in the DMA spectrum at the actual use temperature interval, and the real component of the respective complex modulus drops by an order of magnitude. The films are exposed to the UV light for different time intervals and afterwards DMA and FTIR analyses are performed. The influence of the UV exposure on permeation of nitrogen molecules through the foils is tested by the time-lag method. Different relaxation processes in a single polymeric material strongly influence its behaviour when it is mechanically stressed. In the case of multilayer films the relaxation spectra are far more complex, due to the overlapping of relaxation peaks for materials involved. The UV irradiation reveals some more information on structure and dynamics of polymers that can be observed in DMA and FTIR spectra.
