EU emissions trading system overview with price analysis of EUA
The EU emissions trading system (EU ETS) is a cornerstone of the European Union's policy for facing the climate change and its key tool for reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions cost-effectively. It is first and the biggest international system for trading greenhouse gas emission allowances. The EU ETS covers more than 11000 power stations and industrial plants in 31 countries, as well as airlines. In 2013 started the third phase of the EU ETS which will last till 2020. In this paper the EU Allowances (EUA) prices are analyzed over past two phases. The price trends of EUA are compared with prices of energy commodity. Influence of political decisions on price trends are presented as well. As a result of high price volatility, trading strategies for hedging the price risk are presented.
