Updating of ECDIS System in Polar Regions
Timely updating of ECDIS system ensures its safe, accurate and reliable performance, and also represents a basic prerequisite for safe navigation. Although the present method for ECDIS updating is generally satisfactory, certain shortcomings have been noticed, particularly when it comes to updating vector charts on ships in the polar regions. The exchange of information, i.e. chart corrections, is disabled in the polar regions because the coverage area of satellite communications systems, whose satellites are in geostationary orbits, is limited to approximately 70° north and south latitude. For this reason, a new method of updating ECDIS system in polar regions using terrestrial HF communications systems is proposed. Also, the terrestrial HF communications systems and some important protocols used for the exchange of information are analyzed for the purpose of their application in the process of ECDIS system updating. In addition, the architecture of ECDIS system with integrated satellite and terrestrial communications systems is proposed with the aim of continuous global system updating.
