Occurence of side effects on antypsychotic therapy in hospitalised psychiatric patients

The aim of this study was to established the occurence of side effects in patients on antipsychotic treatment. All psychiatric patients who were hospitalised during 1997 and 1998 on University Department in Psychiatric Hospital Vrapce-Zagreb were analysed. In this period 993 patients were hospitalised, and among them 743 were receiving antipsychotics. On antipsychotic monotherapy were 656 (88.3%) patients and on combination treatment there were 87 (11.7%) patients. Combination therapy includes two anksiolitic and/or antidepressant. Significantly higher percentage of side efect were observed on patient treated with combination of drugs, as it was expected. Due to the side effects profile monotherapy is recomended in psychiatric patients, if it is possible.
