Comorbidity of alcholism and depression

Alcoholism is considered to be widely spread psychoactive substance abuse disorder. On the other hand, depression is predicted to be a leading world illness within the next few decade.Though alcoholism and depression are thought to be a significant public health issue one should be specially aware of severity of their comorbidity. The aim of this research was to detersmine the frequency of depression within alcoholics and non alcoholic control groups. The subjects were diovided into 2 groups:51 alcoholics and 51 controls. Both groups were compared in results on MINI and BDI. A depression was indicated in 76, 5% alcoholics compared to 39, 2% controls, and the difference was statisticaly significant ( P00, 0001)The posible severity of this comorbidity indicates the need of more intensive preventive public health efforts.
