Pollen Viability and Germination Success of Six Sweet Cherry Cultivars
Pollen performance under in vitro conditions is related to its ability to set seeds and fruits following in vivo pollination. Two in vitro tests commonly used for determination of pollen viability and germination capacity were compared. The pollen performance of six sweet cherry cultivars (Bing, Gomilicka, Hedelfinger, Lambert, Stonska and Tugarka) was tested using an in vitro pollen germination test and a fluorochromatic reaction test (FCR). Pollen germination ranged from 22% (Tugarka) to 61% (Hedelfinger). The highest germination percentage among tested cultivars was recorded for Hedelfinger at 2 h and 24 h after sowing of pollen on germination medium. The significant differences among pollen viability and germination ability were recorded for all cultivars except for Hedelfinger. Higher pollen viability was found with FCR for Tugarka (84%) and Bing (83%) than for Gomilicka (72%), Lambert (70%), Hedelfinger (69%) and Stonska (65%). The pollen germination test indicated significantly lower viability of pollen than FCR.
