The Suffering and Hope of Female Christ Figures in Films

Besides performances of “Jesus of the Gospels”, which have been filmed in more than a hundred and fifteen films, there are also films with metaphorical representations of Jesus of the Gospels, called Christ figure films. These films retell the story of the saviours, redeemers, liberators and martyrs who transform the lives of people around them. These Christ-like figures are more “disguised” in secular protagonists, distant, at first glance, from a specifically religious context. They are present in films of various genres: from westerns to science fiction movies. In studies that have examined the issue of Christ figures in film, only a small part was dedicated to female figures. It raises some of the following questions: Are there female Christ figures in the cinema as well? If so, how are they represented? Are these figures theologically legitimate, authentic and relevant? Do they suffer or bring hope? In this paper, the author presents and analyse one cinematographic female Christ figure: Jasmin who is the main protagonist of the film Bagdad Café directed by Percy Adlon in 1987.
