A comparison of the budget deficit in Croatia and selected countries
In order to vivify limp economic progress, governments have often resorted to strong fiscal stimulus and build-up of enormous budget deficits. Experiencing great internal and external imbalances as well as weak economic growth, Croatian government was no different in its actions. Following the great financial crisis and a need for prudent budget policies, the idea of sustainable budget deficit has come to its climax. The aim of this paper is to compare the developments in budget deficit between Croatia and selected European countries by analyzing co-movements in primary and total budget deficits. Conceptual distinction between these budget deficits is important since it implies structural comparison in co-movements between selected countries, namely because primary budget deficit is consisted of total budget deficit less total interest in one budget year. Empirical assessments rely on comparative analysis and cover the data from 2002 to 2012.
