Influence of extractives on colour change of thermally modified beech wood during weathering
The role of extractives on colour change of wood exposed to light is complex and not yet fully understood. Thermally modified wood loses dark colour when it is exposed to solar irradiation, and in spite of the improved properties compared to unmodified wood is still susceptible to surface degradation due to outdoor environmental factors. The objective of this work was to analyse the influence of extractive on colour change of thermally modified beech wood during natural and accelerated weathering. Colour change and chemical change using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy were measured during weathering. Results of colour change showed that extracted thermally modified beech wood samples changed colour less than unextracted thermally modified beech wood samples during accelerated weathering, and partly during natural weathering. On extracted thermally modified beech wood can be observed that reduction of peak at 1595 cm-1 was lees compare to unextracted thermally modified beech wood after accelerated weathering.
