Determining wall displacement in a spherical pressure vessel

When designing a pressure vessel, it is necessary to include the stress analysis of the vessel wall material. Stress calculations can be completed in detail by using the general shell theory. This theory is quite complex and some additional difficulties arise when setting the boundary conditions. When setting the boundary conditions, it is often necessary to determine the displacement of individual parts of the construction. This paper includes derivations of mathematical expressions for calculating the displacement in different sections of the wall in the spherical pressure vessel . The membrane shell theory is also used in the analysis as a part of the general shell theory. This paper is a continuation of a previously published paper which included derivations of mathematical expressions for determining internal forces in the vessel wall and deformation angles of the vessel wall. The axis-symmetric stress of the spherical vessel is analyzed. This stress component consists of the hydrostatic pressure, vapor surface tension pressure, and the vessel weight. A computer program was created based on the developed mathematical expressions. This program can be used to determine the wall displacement in any section of the vessel while using any combination of the above mentioned stresses and vessel geometry. All this is done without getting involved with theoretical descriptions. The performance of this program is illustrated on a specific example and a logical connection between the mathematical expressions for different vessel sections is shown as well.
