Impact of high-fat diet on fe rtility in Sprague Dawley rats
Aim: Pilot study examined the impact of high-fat diet on fertility. Methods: 10 female Sprague Dawley ra ts from the same litter were at puberty (age of six weeks) randomly divided into two groups (N =5 for both groups) and fed with standard chow or high-fat-diet (20% lard, enriched with vitamin and mineral-mix, mixed with standard laboratory chow) ad libidum. At the age of twelve weeks th e female rats were placed in separate cages with one male per cage for mating. The male Sprague Dawley rats were also all from the same litter to mini mize genetic-dependent diversity in future brood size and quality. The number of pregnanc ies and the size of litter were recorded for each group of females. Results: In the control group fed with standard chow the birth dates were spaced between 23 rd and 39 th day with a mean size of litter of 14, and a standard devi ation of 1.414. In experimental group all females also gave a birth between 23 rd and 40 th day, but conception was delayed for two weeks in the case of 3 fema les. Although mean size of litter was also 14, standard deviation was higher, 2.646. Conclusions: All female control group-rats beside s one gave birth within a week time from the date of expected birth. In comparis on, only two HFD rats had their litter in that week. Although the m ean litter size was the same, the HFD rat-litter showed a greater diversity in number of pups. The prolonge d study with a bigger number of animals should further investigate influe nce of high-fat diet on fertility. Keywords: High-fat diet, obesity, fertility
