A model of applying scientific fisheries knowledge to rational management of renewable sea resources
In the context of economic development in Croatia, marine fishery plays an important role, not only as a food source but also as a source of significant profit. According to the information on the current state of the Adriatic Sea fishery, the exploitation of edible, renewable resources has reached a level where it endangered their natural regeneration. Over the last decade, the fisheries management has changed – from the primary objective of observing the sustainability of target species and renewable, edible resources in the sea, to the broader observation of the entire ecosystem and the impact of fishing on them. This approach, in which the fisheries management is based on ecosystems (EBFM - ecosystem-based fisheries management) is offered as a new approach to the fisheries management. Round sardinella (Sardinella aurita), a pelagic species which is becoming more common in the Adriatic Sea, is given as a model for the application of scientific knowledge to implement a rational, optimal management of living, edible and renewable marine resources. Its role and impact on the pelagic ecosystem in the Adriatic Sea has been especially reviewed and discussed.
