Different types of the forest fires on the Croatian coast

Different classifications of forest fires are important to understand the mechanism of origin and spreading of the fire and finally its suppression. The classification of forest fires and their behaviour in consideration of weather conditions have been presented the first time in Croatia. Certainly, the meteorological conditions are not the only effects for the different forest fire types (it is also the kind of vegetation, terrain shape and location of the origin fire) but we would like to indicate that the meteorological characteristics significantly influence on the fire type and their behaviour. Three weather situations during the large forest fire in the Croatian coast and islands have been analysed. Since in this part of Croatia are mainly identical climate conditions and vegetation, weather conditions and topography modify the fire behaviour and effect. Surface wind speed and direction for the nearest meteorological stations (Hvar, Komiža-Hum on the island Vis and Makarska, fig. 1) on the forest fire locations during the periods 29 June - 1 July 1997, 27 July - 5 August 1997 and 3-8 August 1998 have been analysed. The estimation of the upper-level wind speed and direction for locations Split, Komiža and Dubrovnik up to 3 km is determined by the high-resolution mesoscale model ALADIN of the National Meteorological Service - Meteo-France (ALADIN, 1997). The numerical hydrostatic model ALADIN is designed as a limited area version of the global model ARPEGE/IFS.
