Current and future trends in geotechnical engineering in Croatia
In Croatia, geotechnical engineering has strongly developed in the past 20 years due to intensive infrastructural works on the state national roadway and motorway network. During this period, the Department of Geotechnical Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb, has been one of the promoters of such development. This paper presents current and future trends in geotechnical engineering in Croatia. Current trends include achievements in research of deformation characteristics of carbonate rock masses in Croatian karst, non- destructive testing methods and risk management in geotechnical engineering. Future trends include utilisation of industrial waste in sustainable soil improvement, perspectives faced by geotechnical engineering in the utilisation of geothermal energy and the impact of climate changes on Croatian transport infrastructure.
