The role and significance of the 10th corridor for connecting Eastern and Western Europe via Croatia

The 10th corridor is of extreme traffic and economic significance for Europe since it provides the link with the Near, Middle and Far East. Also, from the aspects of EU this corridor enables the linking of Europe and Greece i.e. Mediterranean. A number of roads have been constructed in this corridor, and many more are belong planned. Railway lines have already been constructed earlier, and their reconstruction and expansion is being planned for enabling the high-speed trains. This corridor is also significant for the river traffic, since the construction of the 80 km long Danube - Sava canal will signifgicantly shorten the route and by reconstructing a part of the Sava riverbed, enable navigability from Zagreb to Belgrade and towards the East as well as integration into the navigable waterway Danube - Rhine - Main, both towards the East and the West. The paper analyses the geo-traffic position of Croatia and the neighboring countries in the 10th corridor, plans for the transport development of the road, railway, river and air traffic. It also analyses the economic aspect of linking the Eastern and Western Europe, concession for the construction of certain sections, investment of foreign capital into the building of infrastructure, and other economic activities. Finally, the paper analyses the political and sociological aspects of the 10th corridor, with emphasis on the protection of environment, as well as the significance of easing the traffic load on the Western and Central Europe.
