Leaf Morphology of the Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) - a Methodological Approach
Morphometric methods are frequently used to study the variability of forest trees. As in many tree species the leaves of a single tree differ depending on the type of shoot, this must be taken into account when studying the morphological variability of leaf traits. This paper shows a methodological approach to the morphometric analysis of sweet chestnut leaves, using six different types of shoots: short fertile and sterile shoots from the sunlit part of the crown, short shoots from the shadow, long fertile and sterile shoots from the sunlit part of the crown and shoots from the stump. The morphometric study was based on eight measured characteristics of leaves and two derived ratios, using descriptive and multivariate statistical methods. It was found that the morphological traits of the leaves show a high degree of variability and that leaves within the same tree differ depending on their position on the plant and on the type of shoot.
