Colorimetric method for determination of urine iodine concentration - A simple and reliable method
Iodine deficiency is one of the worlds most important public health problems, causing endemic goiter, mental retardation, miscarriage, and increased rate of stillborns. Several methods are used to measure iodine concentration in urine, among which the chloric acid method for digestion of urine is most commonly employed. This process removes substances that might interfere by reducing or oxidizing ceric or arsenite reactants. We modified Wawschineks method in both sample and reagent volumes as well as in the time of digestion. Our results showed the intra- and interassay variability data to have better reproducibility in higher than in lower concentration ranges. Our method maintained good linearity under dilution. A quality control analysis showed our method to be comparable with other procedures and thus applicable for assessment of iodine deficiency in Croatia.
