Image display techniques in helical CT

Large datasets obtained with helical CT scanners producing as many as few hundred images, make routine axial image reviewing extremely time-consuming and inefficient. Therefore, accompanying computer workstations have now become an essential and irreplaceable tool in radiologists’ hands. Powerful hardware configurations are required to handle and store that vast amount of information. Software applications that produce images in different planes and three-dimensional reconstructions have revolutionized diagnostic and therapeutic radiology. Multi-planar (MPR) and curved-planar (CPR) reconstructions together with multislice helical CT provide images with isotropic resolution in all imaginable body planes. Maximum (MIP) and minimum intensity (MinIP) projections reconstructed from intravenously contrast-enhanced scans have virtually replaced classic intraarterial angiography. Surface-shaded display (SSD) and volume rendering (VR) 3D reconstructions are another cornerstone in imaging of vascular structures, and have even found their place in planning therapeutic procedures. The most amazing display technique is a navigated endoluminal imaging - virtual endoscopy. Its clear-cut advantages over established invasive procedures such as colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, angioscopy etc., have already won a few battles in radiology’s turf wars. Examples will be presented of all listed image display techniques, reconstructed on GE “Advantage Workstation 4.0” (AW 4.0), from examinations performed on single-slice spiral CT scanner (GE “HiSpeed LX/i).
