Accesory spleens
Accesory spleen or splenunculy is a congenital ectopyc splenic tissue arising during embryologic period of development. They are normally found in 10-30% of patients in autopsy. They are usually asimptomatic. We report the case of the adult patient with pain in the uper left hemiabdomen radiologicaly evaluated with ultrasound, color doppler and spiral computed tomography (CT) and diagnosed accesory spleens. A 24-year-old female patient has been admitted to the hospital with pain in the upper left hemiabdomen described as nephrocollicae. First abdominal ultrasound (US) showed three round hypoechoic masses 23-35mm in diamete between upper pole of left kidney and spleen. Color doppler evaluation showed that there are no signs of pathological vascularisation of described masses and the patient was sent to the abdominal CT. On abdominal pre.contrast CT images five well marginated round masses 15-44mm in diameter were found located in hilum of the spleen that ehnanced homogenously on contrast enhanced images. Accesory spleens were diagnosed. Conclusion: CT is the imaging technique most commonly used o evaluate abdomen and therefore is helpful in differentiating accesory spleen from other splenic abnormality and pathologic findings in the upper abdomen. Accesory spleens are usually incidentally discovered but they are clinically important for some patients.
