Aortic aneurysms imaging with spiral computed tomographic angiography

Spiral computed tomographic angiography (SCTA) is a minimally invasive radiological vascular imaging method .Widespread availability of helical CT scanners and advancements in post-processing has made spiral CT angiography of aorta, spiral CT aortography, a method of choice for diagnosing aortic diseases. The purpose is to present the diagnostic approach to aortic aneurysms with spiral CT angiography in our department. Clinical condition, conventional X-ray method and ultrasound findings are the key parameters for the selection of patients who underwent spiral CT aortography. We perform spiral CT aortography on a single-slice CT scanner with an intravenous injector application of non-ionic iodine contrast. Scanning parameters for spiral CT aortography are collimation width 5mm, reconstruction spacing 2, 5mm, scan delay 15- 20s and flow rate 3, 5 – 5, 0 ml/s. The scan protocol parameters are always adjusted to the patients condition and clinical suspicion. The volumetric data sets are evaluated at an additional workstation. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional reconstructions are performed for a better visualisation of the aortic pathologic changes. During the 5 year period 39 patients underwent spiral CT aortography in our department. We have found aortic aneurysms type Stanford A in 6 patients, and aneurysms type Stanford B in 14 patients. In 3 patients we have found aortic main branches aneurysms. Spiral CT aortography can acurately visualise location, size and shape of aortic aneurysm and depict intraluminal and periaortic changes. Spiral CT aortography can give enough informations for diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.
