Phosphogypsum Pelletization Tests

The main raw material for the production of artificial fertilizers Is phosphoric acid. It Is obtained from a polycomponent phospate ore. A by-product is phosphogypsum which contains harmful and dangerous components. Therefore it cannot be used as a secondary raw material. Also, If dumped into waterways, lakes or the sea or if deposited in special areas, It poses a considerable threat to the environment The aim of the present tests Is to prove that pelletlzatlon of phosphogypsum offers certain advantages for handling of this waste material: both handling and transport become much safer and the pellets can be safely deposited. Pellets without binders and pellets with different inorganic binders were produced (gypsum. lime and cement klinker). Produced were also pellets of phosphogypsum without binder and with inorganic binder shells. Tested were compressive strengths of pellets and the solubility of gypsum and pellets. Todate results show that pellets of the compressive strength of 95 N can be obtained which meets the needs of sale handling and transport ; the solubility of pellets (especially of pellets with binder shells) is much lower than the solubility of the phosphogypsum powder. The best results were obtained with pellets with cement shells. In addition to obtaining compressive strengths needed for safe handling and transport, harmful arid dangerous components were to a large extent Immobilized which improves suitability of phosphogypsum pellets for safe deposition. Further tests are underway.
