Spectrophotometric Determination of Titanium(IV) with 1-Phenyl-2-methyl-3-hydroxy-4-pyridone
Titanium(IV) reacts with HX at low concentrations of sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, giving a complex which is extractable with chloroform. The obtained yellow organic phase has maximal absorption at 336 nm. However, if reaction is carried out in the presence of perchlorate ions, the yellow organic phase has maximal absorption at 355 nm. Optimal acidity for the formation of the complex with maximal absorption at 336 nm was found to be at pH 2.2, and for the complex with maximal absorption at 355 nm in the range 1.3 < pH < 2. Because of that broader range and the better sensitivity the latter complex was adopted for use. The composition of the complex according to Jobs method was found to be 1 : 2 = Ti : HX. The optimal concentration range of titanium was 0.5-6 micro g Ti / ml. Beer-s law was obeyed in this range Molar absorptivity was 1.6x10(4). Photometric sensitivity, as defined by Sandell was 0.0029 micro g Ti cm(-2). The reproducibility was 0.2-2 % depending on the titanium concentration. The colour was stable for more 24 h.
