Atmospheric ammonia patterns in the vicinity of fertilizer industry
Gaseous ammonia (NH_3) in the atmosphere plays a significant role in the atmospheric environment, especially in respect to the gas to particle conversion mechanism. But because of its relatively low concentration even in urban communities (ppb range) ammonia has not been routinely measured by the state air monitoring networks. The objective of this study is to present yearly and seasonal atmospheric ammonia patterns in the vicinity of a fertilizer industry as well as to pinpoint periods of measurements that need special attention. The analysis is based on the data produced by the local monitoring network from 1989 to 1995. The mean annual ambient concentrations of ammonia ranged from 26 to 66 micrograms per cubic meters, which is typical fro such urban-industrial area. Yearly patterns are caused by a combination of the changes in air pollution emission and influence of meteorological factors. There are many unanswered questions related to ammonia and most important recommendation is simple and obvious: one should monitor.
