Acinetobacter junii sepsis during HHV-6 infection in an immunocompetent 14-month old child
We describe a case of Acinetobacter junii sepsis during HHV-6 infection (exanthema subitum) in otherwise healthy 14-month old child. The child was admitted to our department due to high fever of unknown origin. During hospitalization, HHV- 6 infection was detected by PCR method. On the third day of hospital stay, the child’s condition suddenly worsened with shivers lasting for 20-30 min. Gram negative sepsis was suspected and ceftriaxone therapy was initiated. Acinetobacter junii was isolated from blood culture. Within the 24-hours of fever resolution typical exanthema subitum rash appears. In two days time he became afeverscent. He was discharged in good condition, and the treatment was continued with oral co-trimoxazole for up to 10 days in total. The source of sepsis was not found nor other reasons for immunocompromised state, except for HHV-6 infection. The child continued with regular check up visits with his pediatrician, and has not been severely ill since.
