Associations of Fatness, Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Habitual Physical Activity with C-Reactive Protein and Fibrinogen Levels in Middle Aged Adults
The aim of this investigation was to assess the associations of body fatness (BF), cardiorespiratory fitness and habitual physical activity (PA) with plasma CRP and fibrinogen levels in middle aged adults. The sample consited of 48 participants, median age: 43. BF was evaluated through BMI, waist circumference (WC) and the sum of four skinfolds (S4SF). Peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) was measured by a portable breath-by-breath metabolic system (K4b, Cosmed, Italy) during a maximal treadmill exercise test. PA was assessed by a multiple sensor device (Sensewear Armband, BodyMedia, Pittsburgh, USA) that was worn for seven consecutive days. High sensitive CRP and fibrinogen plasma concentrations were determined from venous blood samples. Partial correlation coefficients corrected for age and gender were computed. Results showed positive association between logCRP values and BMI(r=0.49, p=0.001), S4SF (r=0.44, p=0.002) and WC (r=0.54, p<0.001). LogCRP was inversely related to VO2peak (r=-0.33, p=0.02). Regarding PA, log transformed moderate PA showed an inverse relationship with logCRP levels (r=-0.29, p=0.04). After adjusting for BF both the association of the association VO2peak and log moderate PA with logCRP were attenuated considerably (r=-0.15, p=0.32 for logmoderate PA and r=-0.16, p=0.28 for VO2peak). Correction for fitness attenuated the relationship between fatness and CRP only slightly (BMI- r=0.39, p=0.007 ; S4SF (r=0.37, p=0.01) ; WC (r=0.42, p=0.003). Serum fibrinogen levels were unrelated to either total or abdominal obesity in this study (r=0.15, p=0.31 for BMI ; r=0.09 p=0.55 for S4SF and r=0.13 p=0.40 for WC). Similarly, none of the fitness or PA variables showed significant relationship with fibrinogen levels.
